In another case that sounds funny but is actually quite grim a 77-year-old man was recently arrested for stabbing another man who failed to place a bet on a winning horse.

It’s believed that the incident occurred in Devane’s pub in Hospital (the geographical location), Co Limerick last Friday at around 6pm during the racing at Aintree. A 45-year-old victim is currently in a stable condition in hospital (an actual hospital) recovering from three separate stab wounds to the head and the ribs.

According to reports, the 77-year-old man gave a small sum of money – believed to be no more than €20 – to the 45-year-old man in order to place a bet on a horse that was running that day. The 45-year-old man failed to place the bet and that particular horse ended up coming home in first place. Typical.

Upon realising that his horse came in without a bet being placed the 77-year-old attacked the younger man stabbing him in the ribs, the forehead and the back of the head.

After the altercation, the older gentleman legged it like a bat of hell.

The younger man was initially in a serious condition however he is said to be recovering well.

The Gardaí eventually caught up with the assailant on Friday and arrested him. However, he was questioned over the weekend and strangely released without charge. A file is being sent to the DPP.

So the next time someone throws you a few quid to put on a horse, you better bloody do it.
