Out of what seems like nowhere, Alex Ferguson has swooped and purchased young Portuguese striker Bebe – pipping Real Madrid to the post.

The Reds are believed to have agreed a fee of £7.5m, subject to him passing the obligatory medical. It had been rumoured that scouts from the Spanish capital had been keeping tabs on him, keen to sign a third forward, prompting Ferguson’s swift move.

Former Reds assistant manager Carlos Quieroz recommended the player to Ferguson, who will now have eight forwards to choose from.

20-year-old Bebe, real name Tiago Manuel Dias Correia, heads to Old Trafford from Portuguese team Vitoria de Guimaraes despite having the vast majority of a five year contract still remaining.

Only last year he was playing in his first season in Portugal’s third division for Amadora, before being spotted and fast tracked to Guimaraes, signing with them at the beginning of July.

It is believed that Guimaraes had a substantial contract termination clause in place amounting to €9m (or £7.5m).
