Graeme McDowell stuck eight birdies in a final round 63 to win the Wales Open at Celtic Manor on Sunday.

McDowell started the day four behind leader Marcel Siem but went out in a sizzling 30 strokes to take control.

He was able to par his way home over the last seven holes to finish three clear of home favourite Rhys Davies and lift his first European Tour event in two years.

Davies broke the course record with a 62 but his hopes of becoming the first Welsh winner of the event receded when he bogeyed the 16th.

Luke Donald, the winner of the Madrid Masters last weekend, finished five strokes off the pace in third with Robert Rock, Edoardo Molinari and Stephen Gallacher tied for fourth a further shot back.

The event took place on the TwentyTen course at Celtic Manor, which has been constructed specifically to host the Ryder Cup in September.
