Rory McIlroy still has to decide which nation he is going to side with for the Rio 2016 Olympics, but the Olympic Council of Ireland already wants the County Down man carrying the Tricolour.
The next summer Olympics might be four years away but there’s already much speculation over which side the no.1 golfer in the world will choose. Fans from both Ireland and Great Britain are hoping the Hollywood man chooses their side, but now it looks as though the Olympic Council of Ireland are doing their best to sweeten Rory up. In fairness, he has a great shot at bagging the gold.
Pat Hickey, the president of the Olympic Council of Ireland said, “I will say to Rory that if he declares for Ireland, then he will automatically put himself in pole position to carry the Tricolour into the stadium in Rio.”
“What he has done on the world stage for Irish golf is absolutely astonishing. Personally, I would dearly love for him to represent Ireland.”
However, in the past McIlroy himself has said that he feels more British than Irish and in fairness – it is his decision to make. No one knows whether or not Hickey’s attempt to persuade Rory to declare for the Republic will actually work. But sure, there’s no harm trying.
Anyway, it’s four years away. We can worry about it then.
