McClean stars as Sunderland rob City with last-gasp winner

He might have been offside, but fans of Sunderland and Man City’s title rivals will care little as Ji Dong-Won scored a last-gasp winner at the Stadium of Light.

In an incredible finish, the substitute evaded the onrushing Joe Hart and finished to the net, even though he was clearly a yard offside when put through by Stephane Sessegnon.

Sunderland had earlier survived an onslaught from league leaders City, who hit the bar twice but failed to capitalise on Manchester United’s shock defeat to Blackburn yesterday.

Incidentally, former Derry City winger James McClean was tremendous on his first league start for the Black Cats and if Giovanni Trapattoni was watching, (or as soon as he gets the DVD) he will have been very impressed.

Could McClean be a wild-card shout for the Euro 2012 squad? If he keeps putting in performances like this, he’ll be in with a shout. For now though, he’ll just (cliché alert) be happy with the three points.

The Premier League title race just got very, very interesting.
