World number 27 Stanislas Wawrinka defeated world number four Andy Murray 6-7 7-6 6-3 6-3 in the third round of the US Open.

Murray won the first set on a tie break 7-6, before his Swiss opponent took complete control of the match, winning the final three sets.

Murray was struggling to explain his loss after the match. “Whether it was fatigue or not I don’t know,” Murray said after the match.

“I haven’t been really tired in any long matches for a long, long time. In the third and fourth sets I was struggling physically and I got frustrated with that. I haven’t been in that position for a very long time.

“I felt like my chance of doing well here was slipping away. I’ve worked very hard to give myself a chance of winning tournaments. When I was struggling physically, I got disappointed.”

Wawrinka said, “I think all my game was pretty good, it was one of my best matches for sure. I was very aggressive. I was doing everything really good so I’m very happy.”
