The Gardaí are to receive new powers that will allow them to check the phone records of crashed motorists to see if mobiles were being used at the time of the crash.
The new powers that will help the Gardaí to find out if motorists involved in serious crashes were on their phones are part of a new 7-year road safety strategy being rolled out by the government.
According to the Irish Independent, the new measure is just one of about 140 recommendations that are contained in the new safety strategy and all aim to reduce the number of serious injuries caused in car crashes on Irish roads.
If the main recommendations are implemented then we’d see a clamp down on NCT’s, it would be mandatory to carry a first aid kit and we’d see the roll out of US-style sobriety checks – so you better practice walking that white line.
The full 7-year safety strategy is to be released later this week by the Transport Minister Leo Varadkar.
