Eamonn O’Brien has been axed as manager of the Meath football team after a meeting of the County Board on Monday night.
It had been recommended by a management committee that O’Brien stay on as boss of the Royal County, but board delegates voted 32-29 against him retaining the post in a secret ballot.
The decision to axe O’Brien brings to an end his three-year spell in charge of Meath, who he guided to their first Leinster title since 2001 in the summer, but it was a title won in controversial circumstances following a last minute Joe Sheridan goal against Louth that should have been disallowed.
Meath suffered a subsequent defeat to Kildare in the All-Ireland quarter-final but it was not thought that his position as manager was under threat.
The Meath County Board are now seeking nominations for the position, with no obvious candidates yet to emerge.
