It was an Irish one-two at Ascot today with trainer Dermot Weld winning his first Gold Cup with 20/1 outsider Right of Passage.
Right of Passage beat Aiden O’Brien’s Age of Aquarius at the finish by a head with Purple Moon in third.
The result meant O’Brien narrowly missed out on his fifth Ascot Gold Cup win in a row.
Yeats had taken the Ascot Gold Cup for O’Brien four years in a row before being retired to stud last year.
Age of Aquarius however, O’Brien’s successor to Yeats, was unable to continue the winning streak at the 3.50 race.
