There’s nothing worse than opening up a present on Christmas morning only to find that you’ve already got it. What are you going to do with two copies of Call of Duty: Black Ops II or another hardback edition of Steve Job’s biography, apart from use them as coasters? So you might as well hop on the bandwagon and sell your unwanted gifts online (just don’t tell that to whoever gave you the present).

According to a new survey, which was carried out by Amarach Research on behalf of DoneDeal.ie, Irish people are increasingly turning to the web to get rid of unwanted presents in exchange for cash.

People living in Connacht and Ulster are the least likely to sell presents online, with 22 per cent of people selling on, while people in Leinster and Munster were most likely to sell on gifts at 26 per cent and 25 per cent respectively.

When it comes to buying unwanted gifts online, 59 per cent of blokes thought it was a good idea. In fairness, if it’s never been opened then what’s the problem?
