It has been reported that over 20,000 youths are currently receiving Jobseeker’s Allowance here in Ireland, but how many of them are actually out looking for work?

It has been reported by the Irish Independent that over 20,000 Irish youths are currently receiving Jobseeker’s Allowance – 20,046 to be exact. SDLP man Mark Durkan received the figures after he asked the Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland for them.

However, with all the talk in recent weeks of people ‘being better off on the dole’ we wonder how many of these Irish youths are actually out looking for work, instead of roaming around a haunted house killing Nazi zombies on Call of Duty all day long. We bet there are a few…

“These figures make for depressing reading and a sure sign that our young people are being failed by government,” said Mark Durkan.

“The Programme for Government pledged the creation of over 20,000 jobs over the next four years, but the reality is that they are not being delivered.

“These statistics do not tell the full story; how many young people have left these shores to seek work elsewhere? Sadly our young people have become our chief export.”

Sad, but true.
