Munster have secured a deal to re-sign prop Wian du Preez on a permanent two-year contract.

The South African joined Munster from the Free State Cheetahs on a two-month loan last November and returned to South Africa for the remainder of the season. Munster head coach Tony McGahan holds the 27-year-old in high esteem after providing cover for the injured Marcus Horan mid-way through the season.

Preez’s agent Stephan Weyers told South African newspaper Volksblad that his client still envisages a return to South Africa at some stage.

“They (Munster) were really impressed by his scrummaging and commitment, and have made a good offer.

“We told (Cheetahs coach) Naka (Drotske) early on that we are considering another offer and were open with him from the outset. Wian would love to end his career at the Cheetahs.”
