We’ve all heard the expression “horses for courses†but the same applies to trainers, and Mark Johnston is one to stay on the right side of when he sends horses to some of the UK’s smaller tracks.
The Scottish handler has a well-earned reputation as being one of the best in the business, with two-year-olds one of his specialities.
Looking through the stats, the midweek tracks of Catterick, Brighton and Beverley appear to be on Johnston’s radar when he’s looking to place some of his two-year-olds to best effect.
Over the past five seasons, Johnston’s strike rate for two-year-olds at those three courses has hovered around the 30 per cent mark.
Even better, a level stakes plan on all Johnston two-year-olds at Catterick, Brighton and Beverley has yielded a significant profit, with a tenner on each horse over that time giving a return of €640.
He has run just one juvenile at those tracks in question this year but expect that to change – in recent seasons he has saddled around 30, so make sure to wow the lads in the bookies with your insider knowledge when this piece of advice inevitably comes up trumps. No pressure on us, eh?
