Newly-promoted Blackpool caused the biggest shock on the opening day of the Premier League season with a 4-0 victory over Wigan at the DW Stadium.
Marlon Harewood scored twice on his debut for the Tangerines and Alex Baptiste and Gary Taylor-Fletcher added the other goals to seal victory over a sorry Wigan side and send Blackpool to the top of the Premier League.
Manager-less Aston Villa also got off to a flying start with a 3-0 win over West Ham at Villa Park. Manchester City target James Milner got the final goal for the Villains after earlier efforts from Stewart Downing and Stilian Petrov.
Birmingham came from behind to snatch a draw against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. The Black Cats went ahead through Darren Bent in the first half. Bent converted from the spot after a harshly awarded penalty and a Stephen Carr own goal put Steve Bruce’s side two to the good.
Captain Lee Cattermole was sent off for two bookable offences and the Blues made the most of the extra man to salvage a point after goals from Scott Dann and Liam Ridgewell.
A Nikola Kalinic goal in the 14th minute was enough to earn Blackburn a win at home to Everton, while Bolton and Fulham played out a scoreless draw at the Reebok Stadium.
Steven Fletcher scored on his debut for Wolves, who recorded a 2-1 victory over Stoke at Molineux. David Jones was also on the mark for Mick McCarthy’s side, while Abdoulaye Faye responded with a goal for the Potters.
