In accordance with new rules, Premier League clubs have submitted their squad lists for this season.
Each club had to have eight home grown players in the squad, who – regardless of age or nationality – are required to have spent three years in the youth system of a club in England or Wales before the age of 21.
Outside of players named in the squads, clubs can also use an unlimited number of under-21 players (born on or after 1 January 1989). For example, Manchester United were not required to name Chris Smalling or Federico Macheda in their official squad.
Clubs can, however, if necessary, name an under-21 player in their squad to make up the quota of home-grown players.
Players omitted from the 25-man squad will be eligible to play only in the Carling Cup until the reopening of the transfer window on 1 January. Clubs can then make an unlimited amount of changes to the squad before submitting a new squad on 1 February.
If a club selects less than 25 players in their squad, they are entitled to bring in players on a free transfer, provided they are unattached.
