Rafa Benitez will leave his position at the helm of Liverpool within the next 48 hours, according to Sky Sports News.
Benitez’s departure is believed to be already confirmed, with the agreement of a severance package now the only stumbling-block.
Benitez has spent six years in charge at Anfield, leading the Reds to the Champions League crown in his first season, but has failed to engineer a breakthrough on the domestic front.
The club will not take part in the Champions League next season having managed just seventh place in the Premier League, and with uncertainty surrounding the club’s financial position and the future of star players Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard, the powers-that-be have apparently decided that Benitez’s position is untenable.
Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill is the bookmakers’ favourite to replace Rafa at Anfield, with Manager of the Year Roy Hodgson and former Chelsea and Russia boss Guus Hiddink also in the running.
