Harry Redknapp was upbeat after Swiss side Young Boys beat Spurs 3-2 at the Stade du Suisse in Berne.

The Champions League play-off round first leg started badly for the north Londoners who were 3-0 down within the first 24 minutes thanks to goals from Senad Lulic, Henri Bienvenu and Xavier Hochstrasser.

A header from Sebastien Bassong just before half-time and a powerful Roman Pavlyuchenko strike five minutes from time gave Spurs hope for the second leg next Wednesday at White Hart Lane.

“That was a great defeat at the end if there’s such a thing as a great defeat,” Redknapp said. “In the end it was a great result from 3-0 down.”

Redknapp refused to blame the artificial pitch in the Swiss capital for his team’s dreadful first-half display. “I don’t want to make excuses,” he added.
