Unseeded Yen-Hsun Lu shocked Andy Roddick as Rafa Nadal easily overcame Paul-Henri Mathieu in the final 16 in Wimbledon on Monday.
World number 82 Yen-Hsun Lu defeated last year’s finalist Roddick in an epic 4-6 7-6 7-6 6-7 9-7 win.
It was the first time Yu, who comes from Chinese Taipei, had ever progressed beyond the second round of a Grand Slam.
Yu will become Asia’s first Grand Slam quarter-finalist for 15 years.
Nadal had no such problems against Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu, winning 6-4 6-2 6-3 in straight sets.
Elsewhere Novak Djokovic defeated Australian Lleyton Hewitt 7-5 6-4 3-6 6-4 and sixth seed Robert Soderling had a 6-2 5-7 6-2 3-6 7-5 victory over ninth seed David Ferrer.
In the women’s singles, Serena Williams overcame Maria Sharapova 7-6 5-3, the sixteenth seed Russian squandering three set points in the first set tie break.
