Manchester United have been handed a massive boost ahead of Sunday’s trip to Sunderland with the news that Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney have both returned to training this morning – and could feature against the black cats.
Reports say that both players have recovered quicker than expected from injuries and Sir Alex Ferguson could use either of them against his old captain Steve Bruce.
Rooney was apparently ruled out for the rest of the season after picking up an achilles injury in training, and he has been pivotal to United’s form this season.
His efforts were rewarded by being named PFA player of the year on Sunday night.
United have also announced that veteran defender Gary Neville has signed a one-year contract extension at Old Trafford. It puts to bed speculation that the 35 year-old would retire or move elsewhere at the end of the season.
Neville has made almost 600 appearances for the club since joining as a youth and making his debut in 1992.
