We’re used to hearing about Ryanair cutting back on costs – and legroom – but now we’re hearing that they might actually increase the size of something… but what could it be?
The next time you take a Ryanair flight, you won’t notice bigger windows, or bigger portions of… well they don’t actually do food anymore, but you may notice that the aeroplane’s doors are slightly bigger. That’s because the Dublin-based carrier plans on increasing the size of it’s cabin doors in order to board passengers quicker. Yes, seriously.
“We want two people to walk through the door. If the door is wider you can load people on and off the aircraft quicker. We want a low-cost plane that suits our business model,” said Howard Millar, Ryanair’s deputy chief executive, to The Guardian.
The airline hopes that the bigger doors will slice minutes off their turn around time, which is where the money lies according to Ryanair. However, getting bigger doors on an aeroplane isn’t that easy.
Ryanair have been in talks with a company called the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China who apparently are taking Ryanair’s out there suggestions very seriously, unlike some of the other aircraft manufacturers. This Chinese aircraft manufacturer looks to be the key to Ryanair’s low fare airtight lock if they decide to build a whole new fleet for Ryanair.
In fairness, O’Leary and the boys have suggested some far-out stuff, like charging passengers to use the toilet, removing one pilot from flights and even having standing seats, so you can see why some of the other manufacturers are reluctant to listen.
Ah well, whatever get’s us there for a fiver…
