Wigan striker Conor Sammon won’t have to serve any suspension after the ridiculous red card he received against Manchester United was rightly rescinded.
Sammon was guilty of the horrendous crime of putting his hand in Michael Carrick’s face as the two tussled for a ball during Wigan’s 5-0 defeat at Old Trafford on Monday, with referee Phil Dowd somehow deeming it ‘violent conduct’ and sending the Dubliner for an early bath.
Although Wigan were unlikely to have won the game in any event, Sammon was sent off when United had only a one-goal lead, but his absence for the rest of the game meant that the Latics went on to receive the traditional hammering they have always received from the Red Devils since entering the Premier League.
The decision to send Sammon off was rightly vilified by all and sundry afterwards, with even Carrick claiming it was tremendously harsh. The FA, have since seen sense and has absolved Sammon of any wrongdoing, meaning he will be free to play against Stoke on New Year’s Eve and further press his late claims for a place in the Ireland squad for Euro 2012.
The FA released a statement which read: “At a Regulatory Commission hearing today, a claim for wrongful dismissal from Wigan Athletic striker Conor Sammon was upheld.
“As a result, Sammon’s three match suspension has been withdrawn.”
