SANZAR (South Africa, New Zealand, Australia rugby) have rejected a proposed Twenty-20 style Rugby Union tournament set to take place in South Africa.

The tournament was to be inspired by the success of Twenty-20 cricket and the IPL in particular.

The plan put forward by former South African international Rassie Erasmus would have seen games played in two 20-minute halves with new rules introduced to minimize kicking.

“SANZAR’s representatives met with the promoters of the competition so as to better understand what was envisaged,” SANZAR CEO Steve Tew said, “and because we are always open to any ideas that might help promote Rugby in our three countries. We were told we would then receive a formal proposal and this has not happened.

“However, having considered the concept and the way in which it has been developed; SANZAR has decided it has no interest in any further discussion of the proposed competition.”
