Luxembourg rider Andy Schleck claimed the race leader’s yellow jersey as Sandy Casar won Stage 9 of the Tour de France on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old had trailed world champion Cadel Evans by 20 seconds following Sunday’s eighth stage to Morzine but the Australian suffered badly this afternoon to allow Schleck to finish the day in yellow.

Schleck remains 41 seconds ahead of two-time winner Alberto Contador, with another Spaniard Samuel Sanchez more than two minutes behind in third. Evans lost eight minutes on the day to bring an end to his Tour de France dream.

The stage was won by French rider Sandy Casar, with Luis Leon Sanchez and Damiano Cunego second and third at the end of a sprint finish into Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne.
