The moment that Sean Gallagher all but destroyed his chances of becoming President was voted as the top TV moment of 2011, according to a TV3 poll.
As Pat Kenny grilled the former Dragons Den entrepreneur on his associations with shady businessman Hugh Morgan on Frontline, Gallagher’s chances of succeeding Mary McAleese in the Áras crumbled quicker than Matt Cardle’s career, and all before the eyes of the nation as well.
“I have no recollection of getting a cheque from this guy,” said Gallagher, while Michael D secretly rubbed his hands together with glee at the adjacent podium his small frame was hidden behind.
The Royal Wedding, which subsequently became more memorable for Pippa Middleton’s rear end than any nuptials, and the state visit of Barack Obama to Ireland came second and third in the poll, with TV3’s coverage of the floods that ravaged the east coast of the country in October following closely behind.
From a sporting perspective, Ireland’s victory over Australia figured highly in fifth place, while Ireland’s Euro 2012 play-off victory over Estonia also made the top ten.
Reflecting our recent and worrying obsession with trashy reality TV, the Nikita love triangle in the Tallafornia teaser episode and the moment Marcus was kicked off the US factor featured prominently, while major worldwide events like the deaths of Colonel Gaddafi and Osama bin Laden were also up there.
In what must have been a galling development for TV3, the vast majority of moments that made the Top 30 were shown on other channels, but hey, keep the chins up, classy programmes like Tallafornia and Boozed Up Irish Abroad are bound to have us transfixed once again in 2012.
