Lucan lads John and Edward Grimes had a lucky escape from Azerbaijan if the country’s National Security Ministry is to be believed.
According to Azerbaijani officials, during the Eurovision contest, held in Baku, dozens of police officers swooped in and caught a number of suspects after terror plots against the contest were foiled. That means that the spiky haired twins had a fairly lucky escape.
According to this morning’s Irish Sun, two of the Jihadists were even shot dead after resisting arrest. We take it they weren’t Jedhadists then… no?
The National Security Ministry said, “The main goal of the group was to stage terrorist acts in Baku during the Eurovision song contest.
“As a result of the measures taken, 40 members of the group were arrested.”
Apparently attacks were planned for the main concert hall in Baku, on the Azerbaijan president Ilham Aliyev and on the hotels used by guests including some of the performers.
The security services that conducted the operation during the contest said, “(We) opted not to disseminate information about neutralising the group during Eurovision in order not to provoke panic among citizens and foreign guests.”
So a group of blokes wanted to blow up the Eurovision… The movie Four Lions certainly rings a bell.
