Did you learn German in school? If so it might be time to crack out the old textbooks – if you haven’t already burned them – as there are currently 2000 job openings available in Ireland for German speakers.

While speaking at the annual German-Irish Chamber of Commerce Christmas lunch, president Ralf Zimmerman turned to the audience and asked them to tell any German speakers they knew living in Ireland to get in touch with the chamber, as there are plenty of jobs for anyone who speaks the language.

Now, chances are you probably went for French over German back in school, and what little German you do know was probably learned from playing a little too much Call of Duty. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t pick up a language book and try learning ze German in your spare time.

Speaking about the importance of languages, Enterprise Ireland boss Frank Ryan said, “I’m often asked what is the world’s most important business language.

“The answer is, your customer’s language.”

“I think the government’s legacy should be that we boldly acted… to become a multilingual society,” concluded Ryan.
