If you have to head out on the roads tonight, make sure to drive with care as Met Éireann is predicting below freezing temperatures later on today.

The Road Safety Authority is warning us about the potentially crap conditions we could be facing if the country freezes over tonight and Met Éireann has issued a Status Orange weather warning for the whole country. With snow, sleet and rain falling throughout most of the day, motorists and pedestrians alike face a slushy and very cold commute home.

“Watch out for ‘black ice’. If the road looks polished or glossy it could be black ice, one of winter’s worst hazards,” the RSA added.

The worst conditions should hit the northern part of the country later tonight with heavy snow falling in high places, while the north and east of Leinster and the north of Connacht may also get their share or snow.

That means you may get up an extra five minutes early in order to clean any snow or frost off the car in the morning. As for driving home, the RSA is urging drivers to take it handy on the roads and to leave extra distance between you and the car in front.
