Strong winds taking their toll on the nation

Strong winds have left 2,000 homes without power, closed the likes of the Eastlink Toll Bridge in Dublin City and the Cliffs of Mohar out west. So watch it out there.

Around 2,000 homes in Cork and Kerry have been left without power this morning thanks to stormy conditions and strong winds overnight. Houses in Galway also suffered from outages, but ESB Network crews managed to get power restored quickly in the City of the Tribes.

Strong 120kph winds forced the closure of the Cliffs of Mohar this morning and gusts are expected to stay fairly strong for the rest of the day.

The winds are causing problems in the east as well with the AA warning that the Eastlink Toll Bridge was out of action due to a loose canopy blocking the way.

Icy conditions also threaten the country with Met Éireann predicting that temperatures will drop to -3C tonight, which is sure to make some roads extremely slippery.

Tomorrow marks the end of winter, but the crappy conditions don’t look like they’re letting up anytime soon – at least not for another week. So just keep your wits about you if you’re driving or walking outside today.
