JOE

By Emmet Purcell

Cufflinks are perhaps the most intriguing and versatile accessories in any man’s collection. Though little more than a decorative fastener, the accessory has long been the preserve of simple, paste-glass buttons or bejewelled studs. However just because innocuous or low-key cufflinks serve the majority out there that doesn’t mean you can’t break from convention with some eye-catching selections – and no we’re not talking “novelty” cuffs here.

Despite the accessory’s diminutive size, jewellery designers Tateossian and Links of London among many others have never been stifled in their ability to explore the boundaries of how cufflinks should look – if anything it emboldens them. Our rule at JOE is that one’s cufflinks should always be practical and stylish, while an innovative design is a great way to break from the herd and assert your own personal style.

It’s important also to remember that cufflinks are unlike any other accessory you may wear – they invite admirers to look and touch, and can be a great conversation point. Moreover they’re a clandestine way to evoke a sense of mystery or personality to the finishing touches of your outfit. We’ve identified some of the coolest, most original and stylish decorative pieces you can find online below.

Paul Smith Multi-Spot Cuffs

After four decades as a reigning British style icon, it’s fair to say Paul Smith knows a thing or two in drawing outside the fashion lines. These cuffs showcase Smith’s typically colourful palette and bring an energetic sensibility to brighten any outfit. Available for €72 from House of Fraser online.

Hackett Semi Precious Button Detail Cufflinks

A simple concept executed perfectly, London menswear specialists Hackett have presented a button design crafted from semi precious stone with a silk wrapped internal centre design. Available for €125 from ASOS.com

Links of London Ruler Cufflinks

Links of London was actually founded in 1990 after the result of an odd request for a pair of fish cufflinks and to this day they provide unique and exciting Mens and Womens jewellery of all types. We’ve selected the above “Ruler” cuffs as it’s another ingenious concept, with the 1-inch sterling silver ruler design matching the length of the accessory. Available for €145 from Link of London online.

Tateossian Brown Scoubidou Wrap-Around Cufflinks

Kuwaiti-born, London-based Robert Tateossian’s is often described as the “King of Cufflinks” and it took every part of our being to shorten our Tateossian recommendations to just three accessories. Our first choice are the above braided brown leather cuffs. Leather is not something typically associated with cufflinks but here is a prime example of using different fabrics to create one-of-a-kind, distinguished pieces. Available for €102 from Tateossian online, the Scoubidou cuffs can also be found in Red and Blue.

Tateossian Black Gun Metal Gear Cufflinks

Another fresh design from Tateossian, the above piece features a gun metal plated open square front section, with freely rotating cogs and gears inside. Evoking steam punk influences, these cufflinks are ideal for anyone that can appreciate the smallest details. Available for €108 from Tateossian online.

Tateossian Spinning Roulette Cufflinks

In most designers hands roulette-themed cufflinks would become an ostentatious novelty. Tateossian have cleverly created a roulette wheel that to the untrained eye resembles a button design instead. The cuffs actually feature a spinning face and moving ball inside, which is a lovely touch. Available for €126 from Tateossian online.
