According to a new survey, one-in-five people will tell lies about their car just to sell it.
With the economic times being so tough for so many, it seems logical to buy a cheaper second hand car. But is what the seller telling you about the car actually true? According to a new survey telling the truth is not always the case.
The survey was conducted by trusteddealers.co.uk and found that around 10 per cent of people are prepared to lie about their vehicle’s mileage, while around 5 per cent of people will lie about previous accidents. So you could be getting yourself into more hassle then the car is worth.
But it’s not just the trusteddealers.co.uk survey that has second hand car buyers worried. According to the vehicle check company, HPI, four in every 100 used cars that have been checked by them have already been declared as insurance write-offs, reports the Irish Independent.
The HPI also said the mileage on six out of every 100 cars has been altered in some way. It really is a case of ‘buyer beware’ when it comes to second hand cars off random Joe soaps.
But what can you do to avoid buying a heap of junk? Well, you could always buy your second hand car from an actual approved dealer. At least then you might have a comeback if something goes wrong with the car. Alternatively, you could bring the used car to a trusted mechanic before you buy it, so that he can give it the once over.
