According to new research, almost two thirds of Irish workers fail to use all of their annual leave days because they’re just too busy.

The research found that people who had days left over (62 per cent) had them to spare because they were just too busy at work.

The survey was conducted by Hotels.com and showed that 52% of workers have at least two unused days a year, while over one fifth (21 per cent) have up to five days outstanding, reports the Irish Examiner.

According to Kate Hopcroft of Hotels.com, the figures reflect the economic climate:

“The findings of this research appear to be reflective of the current economic situation, where people are working longer hours than ever before,” Ms Hopcroft said.

“However, it is surprising to see that two-thirds of people are not taking their holidays especially when almost one in four people can’t carry them into the next year.”

Around 160 Irish workers were polled on the survey, which found that 12 per cent of workers were afraid to use their annual leave days due to pressure at work.

Funnily enough, around 11 per cent of workers said people should not take their annual leave days if it’s busy at work, which sounds like something the top brass would say whilst they float beside a pool side bar.

“It is really important to take your holidays if you can as it’s a great way to de-stress and recharge the batteries which in turns leads to better productivity in the workplace,” Ms Hopcroft added.
