Did you see the hilarious Irish car advert that we featured yesterday? Well JOE has managed to have a chat with Rob O’Rourke, the man behind the Volvo.
If there is one surefire way to sell a car quick it’s with humour. That’s exactly what one Galway resident is currently doing as he tries to sell a Volvo V70 for €500. From reading the ad you may think the seller is an international man of mystery who is jet setting the world with Catherine Zeta Jones and the likes. Well, he isn’t.
The man behind the Volvo V70 is actually Rob O’Rourke, a qualified engineer who is currently bound for Canada. Rob actually bought the Volvo V70 so he could move some stuff from Cork to Galway, without having to get the bus – mainly because he’s sick of the damn bus.
The car was picked up in Cork last week, packed full with Rob’s stuff, driven to Galway and parked up. Since then, it hasn’t budged. Rob came up with the idea of making the unique ad just off the cuff while he was waiting for the tax book to be sent out. Qualified engineer? Someone give this man a marketing job quick!
Rob originally bought the Volvo for €250 after bargaining the seller down from €350, which is a pretty good deal we think you’ll agree. If he makes a profit off the Volvo, which looks likely, he will have owned 14 different cars all of which were sold without loss. Now that’s impressive salesmanship.
If you’re thinking of placing a bid on what he has ‘The best car you will ever own – fact’ then you’d want to do so quick. That’s because Rob has already been inundated with interest in the car, which “runs well” in case you were wondering.
Intercall Call Centre in Douglas Cork has already offered Rob €500 so far and they said it can remain up for auction. So hopefully we’ll see a nice bidding war start for the 1997 motor that has “the richness of character that only comes from a car with unknown numerous owners and over 135,000 of possibly genuine miles”.

Meet Rob, the man behind the Volvo (or in front of, in this case)
Speaking to JOE today, Rob said, “I just did it as a joke to be honest. I got the car on Friday just to move some stuff from Cork to Galway. I didn’t want to get the bus so me and my brother put the stuff in the car, drove to Galway, parked it up and decided to make an ad from it as a laugh while we waited for the tax book. The hype will probably die down in a few days but it’s all been a good laugh.”
If you want to place a bid on Rob’s 1997 Volvo V70, and help him get to Canada in the process, then head over to adverts.ie while you can.
