Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has been discharged from the Mater Hospital, after a week in their care.

Trapattoni was admitted to hospital on Tuesday morning with stomach pains, leaving Marco Tardelli in charge of the team.

The 71-year-old was then forced to undergo minor abdominal surgery on Thursday 12 August, and the operation was a complete success.

“The problem is fully resolved. His general health will help him make a quick recovery, no question about that,’ said team doctor Alan Byrne.

FAI chief executive John Delaney expects the Italian to be fit and ready to take charge of the Irish team for the Euro 2012 qualifiers.

“It’s still three weeks away, he’ll be fine. You can only take the medical people’s advice and speak to Giovanni, but he’ll be grand,” Delaney said.

“To be honest, it’s better to happen now than if we were going to Armenia. That would have been a blow.”
