UK council house tenants paid £500 to do own DIY jobs

Council house tenants in the UK could stand to pocket £500 for doing their own DIY jobs. Well, you wouldn’t see that over here.

A new scheme in the UK called ‘Tenant Cashback’ could see tenants pocket up to £500 a year for doing minor DIY jobs such as decorating, fixing leaky taps, and fitting doors instead of calling maintenance staff in to do it. Like they’ve better things to do.

Basically, tenants are getting paid by the government to fix up their own gaffs.

The new scheme is the brainchild of the UK Housing Minister Grant Shaaps, however, it has already come under some criticism from private tax paying home owners. The Daily Mail reports one home owner as saying, “I am a homeowner and massively in debt, and I can’t even afford to fix my broken fence – why should they be paid using my taxes for doing basic repairs?”

It all sounds well and good, but doing your own DIY jobs can sometimes just make things worse, so maybe it would be best left to the professionals – even if the tenants lose out on £500 per year.

What do you think of this new scheme? Would it work over this side of the Irish Sea? Or would you agree with the commentator above who thinks their tax money could be used for better causes?
