Ulster enjoyed a magnificent victory over reigning champions Neath Swansea Ospreys, while Leinster suffered a narrow defeat to Glasgow in the Magners League on Friday night.

Ulster 27-26 Ospreys

Niall O’Connor was the hero as Ulster recorded a single point victory over Magners League champions Ospreys at Ravenhill on Friday night.

The out-half kicked five penalties and a conversion for a personal tally of 17 points, while Stephen Ferris and Darren Cave both touched down in the first half.

The Ospreys were missing a host of first-team players, but out-half Dan Biggar was in magnificent form for the Welsh side, scoring a try, two conversion and four penalties in a 21-point personal haul.

Richard Fussell scored the try for the visitors, who had to be content with a bonus point and now lie at the bottom of the table following the decision to dock them four points for failing to field a side in a re-arranged fixture between the sides last season.

Glasgow 22-19 Leinster

A late Duncan Weir penalty secured a last-gasp win for Glasgow as new coach Joe Schmidt got his Leinster reign off to a losing start at Firhill Stadium.

The Blues began the game brightly enough and led 16-6 at the break thanks to tries from Donncha Ryan and Isaac Boss and two penalties from Fergus McFadden.

Leinster added only three more points after the break through Isa Nacewa, however and were made to pay for their profligacy as a try from DTH van der Merwe, a penalty from Ruaridh Jackson and eight points from substitute Weir led the hosts to a narrow victory.
