Yesterday we brought you an update on the Garda car surfing picture that’s up on our Facebook page. Well now we have the full story.
After asking for the public’s help on solving the Garda car surfing picture mystery, we received a phone call early this morning from an anonymous tipster who claims to have the full story. Our tipster was actually in the convoy after witnessing the match and this is what he told us…
Apparently, the photo was taken after the 2010 All Ireland Minor Ladies Final between Galway and Donegal. Galway ended up winning the match (well done girls), which you can read more about here.
According to our tipster, who wishes to remain nameless, after the match in Ballinamore County Leitrim the Galway team was returning home in a convoy that contained the team bus, a Garda escort and a long line of traffic made up of the team’s supporters.
The convoy was travelling at a crawl and the girls were actually taking turns hanging out of the Garda car – as it’s customary in the sport to hang out of a car after you’ve won a big title, apparently.
There was also supporters of the team travelling in front of the Garda car who were flagging down other motorists on the opposite side of the road and slowing them to a crawl. It was a quiet country back road and that’s why there’s nothing oncoming in the photo.
Basically, it was all just a bit of semi-organised fun.
A hat tip goes to our anonymous tipster, whoever you are good sir.
