Walter Ferreira stopped his chemotherapy to make sure Uruguay’s star striker was ready.
Suarez scored twice on his return against England – who exit the World Cup after Costa Rica’s win over Italy – and immediately ran to Ferreira to celebrate after his first half header.
The 63-year-old said after the game: “I have no words, life has some ups and downs but you have to keep fighting. I’m very grateful. I’m going to keep fighting.
Referring to the Liverpool striker, Ferreira added: “He deserves it, he worked hard to be here today. I couldn’t go to the (training) resort, so he would come to my house. He gave it all, his wife, his family, I’m truly grateful.”
