Escalators were designed to make life that little bit easier, so having them stop and then switch direction with no warning came as a surprise to these New Yorkers.
Just when you think it’s safe to walk up a flight of moving stairs… The incident happened yesterday morning, during rush hour, on the PATH service between New York and New Jersey.
Everything looks a little confusing, but apparently it was just a simple malfunction on the escalator, which caused it to switch direction. Panic quickly ensues.
Five people needed medical attention after the incident, but luckily no one was seriously hurt.
A lot of YouTube comments ask ‘why did they not just turn around’. The simple answer is that if everyone turned around and began to walk down then the people who where just getting on would have been trampled.
