The driver of a bus was killed after it plunged 50 metres off the side of a road that is regarded as one of the most dangerous in the world.

Whilst trying to negotiate a narrow passage on the ‘Camino de la Muerte’ or the ‘Road of Death’ in Bolivia, the bus gave way in slippy conditions and plunged 50 metres down the side of a ravine, killing the driver, who thankfully was the only one on board at the time.

Onlookers, including one man who was attempting to guide the driver over the narrow pass, looked on helplessly and many screamed in horror as the bus careered off the edge of the cliff.

The road, which runs for 38 miles from La Paz to Coroico in the Amazon region in Bolivia, reportedly accounts for approximately 300 deaths every year and was dubbed the ‘world’s most dangerous road’ by the Inter-American Development Bank in 1995.

Despite its notorious reputation, thousands of tourists flock to the road every year, including some brave souls who cross it on bicycles.

Numerous terrible accidents have occurred on the road in the past, including one of the worst road accidents in Bolivian history in 1983, when a bus veered off the road and into a canyon, killing over 100 passengers.
