At last weekend’s clash between Munster and Treviso Nigel Owens had to remind one player that ‘he was the ref’ and that they ‘weren’t playing soccer’.

As if the headmaster had given him a good talking to, Tobias Botes walked away with his head bowed in shame after referee Nigel Owens gave him a stern talking to.

Munster ended up winning the game 29 – 11 at Thomond Park but the talking point of the match wasn’t the sub-standard performance given by both teams.

The video above shows the moment that Owens stops the match due to a Treviso infringement and then gives a good telling off the scrum half Tobias Botes after he moaned about the penalty.

Owens to Botes: “I don’t think we’ve met before, but I’m the referee on this field, not you. Stick to your job and I will do mine.

“If I hear you shouting for anything again, I’m going to penalise you. This is not soccer, is that clear?”

We would have loved to see Owens in charge of the Manchester derby yesterday, as he would not have appreciated the howls from United players after the Vincent Kompany tackle. He might have sin-binned the Belgian defender though.
