A futuristic motorway that glows in the dark and alerts road users of icy conditions is being built in the Netherlands and here’s what it’s going to look like.

Last year we brought you the news that new glow in the dark roads were being built in the Netherlands making futuristic motoring a current-day reality. Well now some computer generated sketches have been released showing us exactly how the designers behind the illuminating roads expect them to work.

Speaking to Wired last year, one of the designers behind the concept, Daan Roosegaarde said that it was time for roads to “become intelligent, useful drivers of information.”

“One day I was sitting in my car in the Netherlands, and I was amazed by these roads we spend millions on but no one seems to care what they look like and how they behave,” he added.

“I started imagining this Route 66 of the future where technology jumps out of the computer screen and becomes part of us.”

It is hoped that the new motorway will make it’s debut in the Dutch province of Brabant in the middle of 2013, while the interactive lights along with the induction lanes are also planned to go into service in the next few years.
