Wonder why Tim Howard didn’t celebrate his 100-yard piledriver against Bolton on Wednesday night? It’s because he was given a taste of his own medicine a few years back.
The American has been widely lauded for his refusal to lap up the celebrations after putting the Toffees in front at Goodison Park, but while his teammates engulfed him in the aftermath of what was a truly bizarre effort, Howard’s thoughts were with his opposite number Adam Bogdan, with whom he could empathise having gone through a similar experience six years ago.
Back then, Howard was lining out for Manchester United reserves against Wigan when he was caught on the hop by a booming clearance from Wigan’s reserve netminder Floyd Croll.
As you can see from the video above, Howard deserves a fair degree of sympathy as the ball took an absolutely wicked bounce off the wet surface and unlike Bogdan, he made quite a decent fist of keeping it out of the net.
It obviously didn’t have too much of an adverse affect on the American, however, as he secured a move to Everton shortly afterwards and has distinguished himself with the Blues since.
Croll, on the other hand, went in the other direction and now represents the mighty Tiptree United.
Interestingly enough, the video above was uploaded onto YouTube by a user named Croll1. Suspicious much?
