Video: Submarine-like fire truck comes to the rescue

We’ve had to deal with our fair share of extreme weather (by Irish standards) of late, but we could never envisage Irish emergency services going to these lengths in order to save the day.

The video above was taken on Melbourne on Christmas Day, but even though we’re a tad tardy in bringing it to your attention, we think it’s worth it all the same.

Answering the calls of troubled residents in a city suburb, a fire truck ploughed straight through what appears to be a deceptively deep flood before emerging unscathed on the other side, albeit with enough trees on the front to make up a small forest.

At one point, it looked as if the plucky little truck wouldn’t make it, so submerged had it become in the oversized puddle, but the driver stuck stubbornly to his task and made it out safely in the end.

The fire crew came in for major criticism afterwards, as their actions flew in the face of what the government had been telling people not to do, with people attempting to drive through floodwaters accounting for a number of deaths in the country.

One fire-fighter was subsequently stood down, while the rest of the crew are facing suspension.

The mayor of Melbourne saw the whole thing differently, however, and praised the fire-fighters for their bravery.

How we could have used a crew like that Dundrum was, like, totally like, flooded during the infamous Dublin floods last year.
