Video: The best of the New Year’s Eve celebrations

2011 wasn't a vintage year by any means, which is probably why the end of it was celebrated with such gusto around the world last night. Here are some of the best videos.

2011 wasn’t a vintage year by any means, which is probably why the end of it was celebrated with such gusto around the world last night. Here are some of the best videos.

Sydney

The Australian city is a good few hours ahead of the game compared to most major cities worldwide and it always makes sure that its celebrations will be hard to match afterwards. Last night proved to be no exception to the norm, as is evident by the spectacular scenes at the Harbour Bridge.

New York

As was referenced in the cheesy film currently doing the rounds in cinemas, Times Square is the place to be on New Year’s Eve and the punters gathered in their thousands to witness the famous ball drop in the Big Apple last night.

There, was, however, no need for the numerous close-ups of the gratuitous public displays of affection in the clip below.

London

London, of course, is on the same time as ourselves, so unless you were one of the very, very few who didn’t venture out last night, you wouldn’t have seen how they rang it in around the English capital last night. Turns out it was quite spectacular. Enjoy.

Rio de Janeiro

There are already loads of great reasons to visit Rio – the weather, the football, the beautiful women – and it turns out they do a good job on New Year’s Eve as well. Below are the scenes from the famous Copacabana beach.

Tokyo

Diverting away from the traditional fireworks theme, Tokyo natives celebrated New Year’s by releasing thousands upon thousands of balloons into the sky. A strange sight, but interesting nonetheless.
