Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic has signed a new four-year contract which will keep him at the club until 2014.

There had been speculation that Vidic might leave Old Trafford during the summer, with AC Milan and Real Madrid believed to be among the potential suitors for the Serbian defender.

Vidic, however, had always insisted that he was happy in Manchester and Sir Alex Ferguson is delighted that he has committed his future to the club.

“We are delighted Nemanja has committed his future to the club,” Ferguson said. “This kills all the silly speculation over the past few months.

“Nemanja has developed into one of the best centre-halves in Europe and we are pleased he will be here for many years to come.”

Since signing for the Red Devils on Christmas Day, 2005, Vidic has developed into one of the finest defenders in the game and has won a host of trophies for United, including three Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008.

The 28-year old is delighted to have resolved his future and is looking forward to continued success in the coming seasons.

“I am very happy to sign this contract,” he said.

“I came to this club when I was young and have developed enormously with the help of the manager, coaching staff and my team-mates.

“During my time here we have had a lot of success and I look forward to continuing that success in the coming seasons.”
