Spanish striker David Villa has spoken of his surprise that international team-mate Fernando Torres has decided to stay at Liverpool this season.
New Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson had suggested earlier this week that Torres was happy at Anfield, saying that the striker had told Hodgson that he was “looking forward to getting back to work and playing for Liverpool next seasonâ€.
But Villa, who this summer joined Barcelona from financially crippled Valencia, is surprised at Torres’ decision and warned Liverpool that ‘El Nino’ will move on if the Merseyside club fail to collect some silverware this season.
“I am actually a little surprised. It looks like Nando is staying,” Villa is quoted as saying by the Daily Star Sunday.
“After I spoke with him at the World Cup I thought he would sign for Chelsea.
“I think it must only be that Chelsea did not meet Liverpool’s valuation. Because, if they had, I am sure he would have made the move.”
He added: “This is Liverpool’s last chance to keep him. They have to prove they are capable of challenging on all fronts this season, otherwise he will be gone.
“If Liverpool fail to win anything I am sure he will be at Chelsea next summer.”
