The VW up! has been named the 2012 world car of the year and it’s not hard to see why.
The best car in the world to own at this very minute isn’t the Bugatti Veyron or the Aston Martin One77. No, it’s the simple VW up!. This little city motor stole the hearts of over 60 judges and surpassed a total of 33 rivals in order to be named the World Car of the Year 2012.
The announcement was made this morning at the New York Auto Show in New York City’s Jacob Javits Centre. So what does it take to be crowned the World Car of the Year? Well, the awards recognise the year’s most outstanding vehicles based on merit, value, safety, environmental impact, significance, and emotional appeal (aka. sex appeal). So basically, the up! has it all.
‘This award shows once again that in the up! our designers and engineers have created a vehicle that has been thought through in minute detail. A vehicle that sets standards in its class for efficient use of space, safety, motoring fun and environmental compatibility,’ said Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG.
In fairness to the little up! it’s a deceptively large car on the inside and it’s also pretty good to the environment. But you’ll find out all about that when JOE’s in-house petrol-head, Oisín Collins, gets his hands on one over the coming weeks. Make sure to stay tuned for that one.
