Irish defender Stephen Ward has been handed a new contract extension by Wolves which will keep him at Molineux until the summer of 2013.
Ward joined the club from League of Ireland side Bohemians three and a half years ago and has established himself as a vital member of Mick McCarthy’s team.
Usually a forward or attack-minded left winger in his youth, Ward has been remoulded into a left back capable of holding his own in the Premier League.
After agreeing a new improved deal at the club, the 24-year-old Dubliner said, “I’m thrilled to have signed a new deal. To be honest I was a little bit worried picking up an injury so early in the season but I was pleased to get back and play a part.
“To have signed a new deal at the end of a season when we’ve stayed in the Premier League is brilliant for me.
“I’ve grown to love the club over the three-and-a-half years I’ve been here so I’m delighted to be here for another three years.
“The gaffer’s been great to me here ever since I arrived. I hope I’ve repaid him in terms of my performances and work ethic.â€
Ward is currently sidelined following knee surgery, which ruled him out of a place in Giovanni Trapattoni’s Ireland squad for this week’s friendly internationals against Paraguay and Algeria.
