30/04 Weekend fancies

JOE's weekend betting fancies as well as our special "break the bookie" - which could land you in the big bucks.

Weekend fancies

It’s the bank holiday weekend and as usual, that means sport by the barrelful for you to sit and enjoy for three days solid. Three of our provinces are in action at the business end of the season in both the Challenge and Heineken Cups, the first classic of the flat racing season, the 2000 guineas, is on at Newmarket, the National Hurling League final takes place at the unusual time of 7pm on Sunday evening, there’s some crunch games in the Premier League and if you’re not all sported out of it after all that, the World Snooker championship comes to a conclusion on Monday evening.

If like us, you’re going to be glued to the telly all weekend, you might as well enhance the experience with a few extra quid in the back pocket. Here are our fancies for the weekend.

All the talk has surrounded St. Nicholas Abbey ahead of the 2000 guineas on Saturday at Newmarket as Aidan O Brien’s 3 year old continues his quest for greatness. His short price of 11/8 has put us off slightly so instead we’re going to plump for Al Zir, who can be backed with Paddy Power at 16/1.

Frankie Dettori rode Al Zir at Newmarket on Monday afternoon and has tipped him for glory in the first classic of the flat racing season. That’s good enough for us Frankie. They’ll be off at 3pm tomorrow afternoon.

It’s a massive weekend in the Premier League with Manchester United looking for hated rivals Liverpool to them a favour in the title race. We can’t see that happening, however and fancy Chelsea to take the spoils at Anfield. A 2-1 victory for Ancelotti’s men at 13/2 looks like good value to us.

Connacht are entering into slightly unknown territory this evening playing in a European semi final for only the second time in their history, but they will be backed by 8,000 fanatical supporters and we fancy that the sixteenth man could be crucial in getting the Westerners over the line, but only just. Michael Bradley’s men to win by a margin of 1-5 points is available at 11/2.

Break the Bookie

This is the fun part of the weekend where we give you three outrageous bets. As insane as they sound, a simple tenner could earn you massive money if all three come good. Let’s get started.

With an evening throw in and fans in good form due to the Bank Holiday weekend, we think the NHL Division One final could be a cracker. What chance it getting off to an explosive start? A Galway goal as the first score of the game is available at 16/1. With Joe Canning around, anything’s possible.

Richard Dunne returns to his old club tomorrow after being shafted out of City in favour of the vastly inferior Joleon Lescott. What chance the Honey Monster sticking it to Peter Cook and the boardroom boys at Eastlands by knocking in the first goal of the game? You can get it at an attractive price of 33/1.

And finally… the media shy Floyd Mayweather takes on Shane Mosley in the defence of his WBA welterweight crown on Saturday night. He may have a bit of a mouth on him, but man, the boy can box. Put some down on Mayweather to knock Mosley out in round 1 at 50/1 and Floyd won’t be the only one with ‘money’ as his middle name.

Your return from €10 after these three ‘cast-iron’ flutters? A whopping €294,780.
