Former Olympic champion Bradley Wiggins has admitted that he is just battling to finish the Tour de France after a “sh*t” race so far.

Wiggins lost more than four minutes to race leader Andy Schleck during the first day in the Pyrenees on Sunday.

The Team Sky leader, who finished fourth last year, is now in 18th spot with three more difficult mountain stages to come this week.

And speaking ahead of the start of the 15th stage from Pamiers to Bagneres-de-Luchon, Wiggins said, “I’ve had a shit tour on paper, but I’m 18th overall so it’s not that bad. Last year I would have been masturbating at the thought of being 18th overall.

“We’ll just keep pushing on to try to finish as high as I can in Paris. I have to work for the team because there’s been a fantastic team effort all year.

“The support on the road has been fantastic too. You’ve a sense that you’ve let people down but they haven’t shown that at all on the road.”
